Biodiversity and Choice

We believe in the essential importance of biodiversity.

Preserving natural ecosystems, while feeding earth's growing population and combating climate change, is a critical challenge of our times.

We believe that diverse agricultural production systems and informed consumer choice are vital to creating a healthy and resilient society.

As consumers with diverse preferences, we have access to healthy antioxidants and anthocyanins from a diverse array of foods, including purple tomatoes.

Tomatoes with anthocyanins were made both with traditional breeding methods and engineering methods.

We believe that each approach has advantages and appeals to different consumers.

The genes responsible for anthocyanins are naturally present in tomatoes, but they are inactive in most domesticated varieties. These genes have been reactivated in our Purple Tomato by the addition of two genes from snapdragons.
